We kiwis have always been a nation with a great nose for a deal – but in these tough economic times, finding ways to save more and spend less is more important than ever – especially if you have a goal in mind, like a great holiday. There are heaps of ways we can save money, often without even noticing! Bring some romance into your life...

snuggle up together on the sofa under a duvet instead of using the heater.

Make your clothes dryer a no-go zone.

Dry clothes on the line, or on a clothes rack if it’s raining. And put the clothes through a cold wash – did you know that a warm wash uses as much energy as a drier cycle? Crikey!

Got the urge to splurge?

If you’re an impulse buyer, consider using online shopping instead of visiting the supermarket. Yes you’ll pay a delivery fee, but often you’ll actually end up spending less by only buying what you need, and by using the online system to make the most of specials and deals.

Wasting food is throwing money away.

A UK study in 2008 found that the average household bins – get this – one-third of food purchased. That’s one expensive load of rubbish! By learning to manage your food better, you can make big inroads into saving by slashing your weekly food bill. Here are a few ideas from the fabulous Healthy Food Guide website:
  • Fruit about to go off? Whizz it all up, freeze with an iceblock stick and presto!
  • Delicious iceblocks.
  • Keep a bag in your freezer and add all leftover veges from each meal: when the bag’s full, you can make a tasty vegetable soup. Save leftovers and enjoy them for lunch the next day popped into a Pitta pocket, tossed through a salad, or mixed through some couscous. Quick, easy, and saves you buying lunch, too!

Love fashion and clothes?

Got some items in your wardrobe that are still trendy but either don’t fit or you’re sick of? Get your fashion-loving mates together for a ‘swishing’ event at your house. Popular overseas, swishing is a fun way to update your wardrobe without shelling out any cash whatsoever! You simply need to ask everyone to bring along their unwanted (but nice) clothes and accessories, and at the event, you all swap items. One person’s unwanted tote bag is another’s treasure!
